Character History:
Makoto Naegi was a normal kid. He lived a normal life, with a normal family, normal friends, and a pretty average lifestyle. He didn't always get along with his little sister, Komaru, but they were still fairly close.
He met Sayaka Maizono in middle school, though he never really got to talk to her despite harboring something of a crush for the girl. Unbeknownst to him, he caught her attention by rescuing a lost crane that was making a scene at the school, but due to them being in different social circles, they never interacted at the time. He went to Dusk High School afterwards.
Then, it seemed, was Makoto Naegi's worst day ever - he'd found some of his friends, and lost a game of rock-paper-scissors and went to get groceries for everyone. This set off a chain of unfortunate incidents that ended up counteracting a jewel thief's knack for good luck, and ended up with him being scouted to Hope's Peak Academy. See, Hope's Peak Academy was known for scouting students who were the best of the best at what they did - there was a Super High School Level Mechanic, for instance - but there was also one lucky student who got scouted by the school each year. This student would become the Super High School Lucky Student, and, for lack of a better word, luckily for Makoto... he was scouted for Class 78 at Hope's Peak Academy (also because his bad luck turned good luck resulted in the previous Lucky Student's still-undelivered mail got destroyed in the chain, but details) and he prepared for his life to be turned upside down.
Before going to the school, he looked up who some of these Super High School Level students were... and knew he was going to be virtually outclassed and among some of the most elite high school students in the country.
It was a daunting time at the school, but he made friends, even 'reuniting' (though it was really meeting for the first time) with Sayaka Maizono, who was the SHSL Pop Sensation. In the same class as him were Junko Enoshima (the SHSL Gal/Fashionista), Chihiro Fujisaki (the SHSL Programmer), Hifumi Yamada (the SHSL Fanfic Writer), Kiyotaka Ishimaru (the SHSL Moral Compass), Kyoko Kirigiri (the SHSL Detective), Aoi Asahina (the SHSL Swimmer), Byakuya Togami (the SHSL Affluent Prodigy), Celesia Ludenberg (the SHSL Gambler), Leon Kuwata (the SHSL Baseball Star), Mondo Oowada (the SHSL Biker Gang Leader), Sakura Oogami (the SHSL Wrestler), Toko Fukawa (the SHSL Writer), Mukuro Ikusaba (the SHSL Soldier) and Yasuhiro Hagakure (the SHSL Clairvoyant).
About a year passed while Makoto made friends with most of the rest of Class 78 and spent much of his time with them, until The Tragedy occurred - better known as The Biggest, Most Awful, Most Tragic Event In Human History. It then became a real danger to Hope's Peak Academy to keep its doors open, since its goal was to nurture talent and raise hope in the country, which is why it was nicknamed 'The Academy of Hope.' To ensure the safety of the students inside, the headmaster, Jin Kirigiri, decided to seal the school and allow the students to live forever at the school. Makoto and the rest of Class 78 agreed to this plan, and helped seal the building's windows and doors so no-one could come in or go out.
Unfortunately, the perpetrators of The Tragedy, known as the SHSL Despair, were already among them.
And soon, Makoto and the rest of Class 78's school memories were taken from them.
Makoto woke up in a classroom, dizzy, thinking he'd simply passed out in the main hallway on his very first day of school. However, unknown to him, he could remember nothing past that point in his actual school life. He meets the other students in his class in the entrance hallway, finding out that the school had a maximum security door and guns on it (that were also installed by the school prior to the memory loss incident) and that the other students were just as confused as Makoto. Thinking none of them had met before due to the memory loss, everyone introduced themselves to one another, not knowing that the Junko Enoshima that stood with them was actually Mukuro Ikusaba, her twin sister, standing in for her so she could sit in the shadows and be the 'mastermind' of the plan they'd concocted. (This was because Junko was easily recognizable by anyone even before they'd entered the school, meaning even with their memories lost they'd know she was one of the attendees for their year, whereas Mukuro was the SHSL Soldier and wouldn't be widely known.)
Soon after, they all go to the gym after hearing an announcement and find out that the headmaster of the school is a black-and-white bear named Monokuma. Monokuma explains their situation, that they were chosen to live inside this school forever - and if anyone wanted to escape and go out into the world again, they had to kill another student and get away with it in order to graduate.
As everyone stared at each other, starting to doubt everyone other than themselves, they're brought to their senses, before Makoto accidentally pisses Mondo off and gets knocked out. He wakes up in his new dorm room. A few days after that, Monokuma announced that he has a surprise for everyone - which turns out to be DVDs, each with one of the student's names on them. Makoto's showed his parents and sister wishing him the best of luck, before changing to the room they were in but completely destroyed and without the family. He suddenly sees Sayaka running out of the room after she freaks out, and he chases after her, calming her down after finding her and promising that he would keep her safe no matter what.
That night, Sayaka asked Makoto to swap rooms with her, because she heard knocking at her door. They swapped keys and he slept in her room while she slept in his. The next morning, Sayaka wasn't at the breakfast meeting the group had been having since the incident started - and upon investigating his room, Makoto found her dead in the bathroom. And due to the incident happening in his room, he was the prime suspect. And soon after that, 'Junko' died due to defying Monokuma.
Makoto did his best to find all of the evidence he could so he could be cleared of suspicion, but even going into the class trial (where they would need to find the killer and correctly pin the murder on them, or everyone but the murderer would be killed to allow for the murderer to graduate) the rest of the class suspected him.
Makoto argued with the others and uncovered clues that eventually pointed to Leon as Sayaka's killer, and after debating with him, Leon was found guilty of the murder and sentenced to punishing - execution by being shot by a bunch of baseballs.
Even though it turned out that Sayaka was planning on murdering Leon and pinning the blame on Makoto, she left a very valuable clue in the form of a dying message as, presumably, a way to protect him, regretting that she had made the decision in the first place.
Soon after the class trial, Makoto is asked to be the judge in a contest between Kiyotaka and Mondo - who could stay in the sauna the longest. The next day he found out they forged a brotherly bond and never spoke of who 'won' the contest. And then, the day after that, Monokuma summoned the students for a new motive - he threatened to release an embarrassing secret of everyone's to the public. Hilariously, Makoto's deepest, darkest secret was only that he wet the bed until fifth grade.
Unfortunately, the motive ended up succeeding regardless, with Chihiro winding up dead. Along with finding out that Toko had disassociative personality disorder (she had multiple personalities, with her other being an infamous serial killer known as Genocide Jack), it was revealed at the trial that Chihiro was actually a boy, even though he had dressed up as a girl to that point. Makoto ends up pinning Mondo as the killer, finding out that Mondo killed Chihiro in a blind rage after finding out Chihiro was coming out about his secret and attempting to get rid of what his own weakness (and inadvertently causing Mondo to feel like he was weak for not coming out about his own secret).
It wasn't but two days after Mondo's execution that yet another motive went out - Monokuma was offering ten billion yen to the student who graduates. Makoto was sure that nobody would kill over something as simple as money.
Soon after, thanks to Aoi seeing what she thought was Chihiro's ghost, the group discovered Alter Ego, an AI programmed by Chihiro that looked and sounded like him. Unfortunately, that good luck came to a halt as soon after, Alter Ego was stolen and it was revealed there was a traitor in the group, working for the mastermind. And on their way to find Alter Ego, Celestia was attacked by someone in a 'Robo Justice' robot costume. Makoto tried to warn Kyoko and the rest of the group, but found Hifumi presumably dead. Kiyotaka was found soon after, also dead, and Hifumi ended up in the same room as well between the group's visits to that area.
After an investigation and a class trial, it was revealed that Celestia was the murderer, and she'd attempted to get Hifumi to work with her to kill Kiyotaka while she killed someone else so one of them would be sure to escape. She simply killed him after he killed Kiyotaka.
The next day, Makoto finds out about a secret room from Kyoko, and goes to investigate it himself. He finds records and a student register, as well as a paper with the words 'You must not leave this place.' He feels as if he remembers those words, but he can't quite place it. A few moments after, however, he's attacked by someone wearing a mask, knocked out, and the room is cleaned out while he sleeps. Once he wakes up and finds that everything's gone, he decides to go back to his room, until he hears sounds coming from the gym, and discovers Sakura fighting Monokuma, saying she will no longer resist and will fight back against the mastermind. He doesn't let them see him and goes back to his room to sleep.
The next day he decides he's going to talk to Sakura about it, but before he can, Sakura is found killed. Before they did find her, Makoto plugged Alter Ego into the school's network to try and see what info they could find, as the computer Alter Ego was installed on didn't have that much info. Through their investigation and the trial, it's revealed she committed suicide. In her note to them, she says she did so because she was forced to kill someone or she would lose her dojo, which the mastermind had taken hostage. So she did kill someone - herself, because she could not bring herself to kill her friends. This angers Makoto and he accuses Monokuma of being the real reason all of this is happening. Unfortunately, it solves nothing, and the punishment happens anyway, with Monokuma putting Alter Ego in what would have been the murderer's place.
The night after the execution, Makoto is attacked in his room while he's asleep, but the attacker is fought off by Kyoko. After waking up, Makoto finds the others awake in the gym disassembling a Monokuma, and soon after they find who they believe to be the mastermind... dead. During their investigation, Makoto stumbled upon finding out the control room was open, realizing that this was the room Monokuma, or the mastermind, was able to watch them from. Monokuma appears and tells him that the killing game is being broadcast to the world.
Makoto finds out that Kyoko's been getting around the school and finding areas without cameras by using a skeleton key she stole from the Headmaster's Room, which was locked before (but broken open by Sakura as part of her revenge against the mastermind before she killed herself) and though everyone believed Kyoko was the murderer, Makoto refused to believe it. It was also revealed that the victim of the case was Mukuro Ikusaba, who they haven't seen at all up to this point (her body was destroyed by a bomb left on it the moment they discovered her dead body with the mask on.) As a result of Monokuma stopping the trial due to no more progress being made, Makoto was voted guilty and Monokuma said it was correct, even though it wasn't. As Makoto went through his own execution, Alter Ego appeared at the last second, hacking into the system and saving him, causing him to fall down a shaft into a basement, having to sleep for a while to conserve his energy due to not finding any food. Kyoko ends up rescuing him, and they make their way back up to the school, convincing the others that Makoto was not the killer, and Kyoko convincing the mastermind to let them find the mysteries of the school and the identity of the mastermind so they could all escape together. Monokuma agrees and opens all the doors in the school.
The investigation re-opened, Makoto finds some startling evidence about a past he doesn't remember - all of the students agreeing to be locked in the school, the fact that Monokuma was being controlled by the mastermind in a central control console (try saying that five times fast!), the fact that Mukuro was the SHSL Soldier, and that the mastermind was among them.
It's then revealed during the trial that the Junko Enoshima they knew was actually Mukuro Ikusaba disguised as her, which Junko had Monokuma kill her in cold blood. The real Junko makes her appearance in the trial room, and forces the survivors to answer questions based on the school and the reason the killing game was going on. She then shows them that The Tragedy had already happened a year ago, and them killing themselves over trying to get out of the school was a joke - there was no world to go back to but one of despair.
In the end, Junko told them they could choose to leave the school together or stay there forever - but if any of them chose the latter, Makoto would be executed. The others, knowing the despair that lay outside, lost their hope, and Makoto, filled with his own hope, inspired the other survivors to vote to leave with him. With this, Kyoko tells Makoto that he is something better than the SHSL Lucky Student - he is the Super High School Level Hope.
Makoto defeats Junko, and she accepts her own execution - which is a combo of all the previous executions thus far, and he and his friends make their way to the front door, with a device Junko left for them - thus opening the front door to the school at long last and beginning to experience the world that lay in front of them...
Abilities/Special Powers: Makoto has no real supernatural powers, but he has a knack for good luck (even if it comes at a cost of personal bad luck to achieve that good luck). He does have a fair amount of intellect, and is good at solving mysteries.

A new world, a new beginning... this wasn't the world that he saw from the school's front door, but it was the one he had to live in for the time being. And he was somewhat okay with that - it was its own closed-in realm with people who didn't want to be stuck there. People he could help, people he could make friends with and assist. And this time, there was no killing game to worry about. No Monokuma, no Junko... and none of the other survivors, either.
Was he really okay with this? Well, truthfully, he had no say in it! And that bothered him. He thrust open the front door of the mansion, and took in the sights around him. The people walking around. It was at least less restrictive than the barred Hope's Peak Academy had been. It felt more... full of life. Full of hope. And that was at least something that filled him with happiness.
Until he could go back home, Makoto decided to make it his mission to fill this new world with hope. He'd make new friends, see new sights, come to grips with his own issues... and he'd triumph, and show everyone the true meaning of hope. Because in the end, hope could triumph over despair any day - and despair would not take this world by any means if he could help it. And who knew who might show up? If Kirigiri-san or Asahina-san appeared, that would only make it easier to do things here, and then, they could all go home. Right...?

Oh! If you're from Hope's Peak Academy, let me know as soon as possible. [That's... a risk he's taking. That's a sure risk. But it's one he's willing to take. She couldn't be here... right...?]
